IF you think that English Learners or ELs are students who are born in other countries, move to the U.S., and speak a language other than English, you are correct! However, the increasing number of students born on U.S. soil and speak a language other than English are ELs, too.
Well, what about the students who are native English speakers? Would they qualify as English Learners? Yes! In fact, ALL students attending schools in our country are technically English Learners! The main difference between English learners is that non-native English-speaking ELs generally process language in their native language before they are able to translate and express information into English. It may take several years and specialized instruction to enable them to meet the academic expectations of the Georgia Standards of Excellence (GSE). According to Georgia's Governor's Office of Student Achievement, the number of Hispanic students alone nearly doubled in the 10 year period between 2003-2013. As of 2016, that number continues to grow.
To meet the ever-changing needs of our state's linguistically diverse population, general education and ESOL (English to Speakers of Other Languages) teachers must utilize effective strategies and instructional resources. PEACH E~books' primary goals are: 1) to locate effective resources for English Learners (ELs) and 2) to create resources for ELs.
